Per the syllabus, please submit a proposal for your final course project via Canvas. Here are some guidelines for the proposal:
Review the final project assignment available at Canvas>Assignments>Final Project.
Spend some time in the library (or the library website) searching possible sources related to the topic(s) you are considering. If you have several ideas it might help to see how much relevant scholarship is out there to draw from. Start putting together a bibliography. Think both in terms of primary and secondary sources that will provide data on the specific topic you wish to write about as well as theoretical literature that will help you contextualize your topic. You might also find sources that offer a background information about the geographic, social, political, and historical context(s) of the phenomenon you are studying. You can also consult the course bibliography, located under Canvas>Modules>Course Bibliography.
Draw up a proposal for your paper topic, 350-500 words, not counting the bibliography
Describe the topic you would like to research. You could compare different but related phenomena, or provide an in-depth study of one phenomenon. But you should choose something sufficiently broad that you can find multiple, good scholarly sources on the topic. You will develop your approach to the material in conversation with the instructor.
In your first paragraph, address:
What will be the scope of your topic? (what is/are the phenomenon or phenomena you would like to research?)
What question will you be asking about this topic? What are you hoping to find out?
(Note: do not spend much or any space talking about what drew you to the topic, why you wanted to research it, etc. We can talk about this in our meetings, but here I want you to focus on what you’re going to do, not why you’re interested.)
In your second paragraph, address:
How will the sources you have located help you to answer this question? How will you use them? Be specific: “I will use Author X 2019 to provide background information on the historical population migrations that led to the hybrid genre I am writing about. Author Z 2017 provides a set of song texts that show how songs in the genre speak to political events,” etc.
Then, include a bibliography including at least 5 scholarly sources from outside the assigned readings (in addition to any course readings if pertinent to your topic). Scholarly sources are defined as articles in peer-reviewed academic journals, academic books published on university presses (or other academic presses such as Routledge), or chapters in edited volumes published on university presses. I might also consider a podcast episode, recorded talk, or interview if it features an academic expert. Encyclopedias are generally not scholarly sources, unless you use a fairly substantial entry from an academic encyclopedia (New Grove Encyclopedia of World Music, Oxford Music Online, etc). You may use additional sources that are not peer-reviewed scholarly sources (artist websites, CD liner notes, etc), but these won’t count toward your minimum 5 scholarly sources. If you are having trouble finding sufficient scholarly sources on your topic, please meet with me to discuss research strategies.
