This week we looked at the history of the Museum of Contemporary Art – MoCA – in Los Angeles. I go into detail on this local contemporary art museum in order to clarify how a museum is an institution that is made by people. At times it seems that a museum represents the best of what people can do. Often, though, museums mirror the conflicts of the people who run them and the limitations of the political, social and economic contexts they exist within. In viewing the lectures, you’ll see that the history of MoCA LA has it all: conflict of interest, incompetence, censorship, self-serving trustees. They hire the wrong people and they fire the wrong people, too! So, we don’t need to look far to see some of the key issues facing museums today.
After viewing this week’s lectures and reading the set of follow-up articles about MoCA from the LA Times, which bring the narrative up to date, I want you to turn your focus to museums in the city you’ve been researching. ( I’M RESEARCHING BERLIN ). Does the city you’re focused on have a museum of contemporary art? Most of the cities people are focused on in the class do have at least one. (If your city doesn’t have one, please email me to consider how to approach this.)
Take some time and research the/a contemporary art museum in your city. When you do an internet search about it, what stories come up? Most of the contemporary art museums around the world have a saga of their own. What can you find out?
In your post, please tell us your city as well as the specific museum you’re discussing. What have you been able to learn about it? Here are some questions to try to answer: when was it founded? who was involved in creating it? why? is it a public institution or a private institution? how is it funded? what are the prominent stories that you encounter about the museum in the press?
After you’ve learned more about a contemporary art museum in your city, please consider whether there are any themes that resonate with our discussion of MoCA LA this week.
Again, internet searches will be important for gathering information. You should also be able to learn a lot from the museum’s own website.
Make sure you are focused on a museum of contemporary art.
