In the first paragraph, drawing on the secondary source, describe in a few sentences what they did that made a difference. In the second paragraph, on at least three primary sources and at least one secondary source, describe the 10-20 year period in during which the actions took place. Finally, reflect on the relationship between the individual and the time in which they lived. What possibilities and what constraints did that period present to that person? How did this person navigate these possibilities and constraints? What options for action might the person have pursued, and why do you think they acted in the way they did? What do these individual’s actions tell us about the puzzle of individual agency and historical context in making change in the food system? Tips:
Organization
While there will not be an overarching argument for this essay, there should be a clear topic sentence for each paragraph. Aim to keep each paragraph to 4-6 sentences. Avoid beginning or ending a paragraph with a quotation. Analysis:
You should be drawing from course lecture notes and texts, not outside secondary sources. Failure to use assigned readings or lecture notes will count against you. For primary sources, use Proquest Historical newspapers or Newspaper Archive to find sources.
Any time you draw from any source, you need to use an in-text citation to acknowledge the source from which it came. Include a bibliography of sources you used, and submit the primary sources you relied upon to reconstruct the period and place in which the person lived with your essay.
