In 1955, Walter Elias Disney (a.k.a. Walt Disney) opened Disneyland in Anaheim, California. Disney envisioned Disneyland as a new type of amusement park, a theme park, in which all the structures and attractions are based on a central theme; the fantasy world of Disney’s cartoons. Over time, the success of Disneyland led to the opening of five new Disney theme parks around the world: Walt Disney World, opened in 1971 in Florida; Tokyo Disney Resort, opened in 1983 in Japan; Disneyland Paris, opened in 1992 in France; Hong Kong Disneyland Resort, opened in 2005 in Hong Kong; and Shanghai Disney Resort, opened in 2016 in China. In 2016, Disney theme parks hosted more than 140 million guests, making them the most visited theme parks in the world.
Unfortunately, in addition to being known as a major destination for family vacations, Disney theme parks are also famous for the long lines and waits in their most popular rides. These long waits create two main problems for Disney theme parks because they spoil the experience of their guests and reduce the time guests spend on the many Disney stores and restaurants in the theme parks. As a response, Disney has turned queue management almost into a science.
For this assignment, you will have to conduct your own online research to learn about the strategies Disney theme parks use to manage their queues. Do a Google search for “queue management at Disney” and you will find many hits with abundant information on the topic. Then, please write a short essay (500 to 700 words) describing the queue management strategies Disney theme parks use to ease the problem of long waits.
