For your first essay in this course, I would like you to write about the first time you chose to rebel against an authority of some kind (parental, legal, educational, etc.) and why you did so. You do not need to moralize or justify your actions, I am simply interested in what you did, and why you did it–remember, I’m not your mom 🙂 I use these essays to get a feel for where each of you are as writers. I will never share anything you share with me, so I hope you are comfortable being frank. Alternatively, if you are not comfortable sharing personal information, feel free to write your essay about a hypothetical rebellion 🙂 I.e., if you were going to rebel, what authority would you rebel against and why. Your essay should be written in MLA format, typed, and should include all the components of an essay: a title, an introductory paragraph with a thesis statement, body paragraphs with topic sentences, and a concluding paragraph. Since B1A is a pre-req for this course, you should be familiar with MLA and basic essay structure. However, if writing isn’t your strong suit, not to worry–everyone who completes this assignment will receive full points for doing so! No matter how imperfect or perfect your essay may be. Remember, these are more for me than you.
