As defined by Sellers (2005) the space mission operations system is anything that has to do with operating in space. This includes the organizations that design and build the parts and pieces to construct the rockets, capsules, and engines needed to achieve orbit. Additionally, the facilities and personnel to test and launch those rockets, as well as, communication stations to remain in contact with the space craft. Space launch is a well orchestrated event with responsbilities spread out through multiple different levels and locations throughout the country and world.
One of the key elements of the space mission operations system is communication. Without strong communication there would be no knowledge of how the spacecraft is performing or what condition(s) the astronauts are facing. This part of the mission operations system can be described as the communications architecture. The communications architecture is comprised of the satellites located in orbit, the ground stations on the Earth’s surface and the network that ties them together (Sellers, 2005). There are four key elements that enable the communications architecture to be successful, the spacecraft, ground stations, control center, and relay satellites. The spacecraft are things such as the SpaceX Dragon capsule or a probe being sent to far away areas of the solar system to collect scientific data for researchers. Ground stations, based on Earth, are the antennas and transmitters and receivers that talk back-and-forth between the space craft. The control center commands the entire operation controlling the spacecraft and all other elements. Relay satellites are additional spacecraft or saellites located in space that operate as relay stations to send communications to the main spacecraft and the ground stations (Sellers, 2005). All of these elements must be operational in order for the communication architecture to remain in place enabling communication betweent the control center and the spacecraft.
