The Paper:
This paper gives you the opportunity to explore the different interpretations of freedom and liberty that developed as a result of social, cultural, and economic change in the late 19th century U.S. Your paper will be a close reading of primary documents put into historical context. For this assignment you will need access to the course texts “Give Me Liberty” and “Voices of Freedom.”
Your paper should address the following question(s):
How did diverse Americans attempt to either assert their liberty/autonomy or redefine the concept of liberty as a result of the economic and cultural changes associated with Industrialization? Your paper should discuss the experiences of at least three different groups of Americans that we have studied thus far.
The paper should demonstrate the uses of primary sources by analyzing them and placing them into the historical context you have discovered through the secondary readings. You may of course draw on information you’ve gleaned from lecture, textbook, and required essays/videos. However, your paper should be focused on using the primary documents to support your overall analysis. This means that if you summarize your entire textbook or other secondary sources while minimally using the primary documents, you will not have met the requirements for this assignment. Also—when using the documents, be sure to incorporate the documents into your overall argument…don’t just summarize of quote from the document summaries and introductions…use the ideas and words of the people you are studying.
Be sure to begin your paper with a thesis statement. Use specific examples as evidence for your points, and avoid unsupported generalizations. You are writing a piece of history.
The paper should be approximately 4-5 pages long, typed and double spaced w/ 1” margins on all sides and using 12 point times new roman font.
All quotes and ideas taken from the documents or other readings must be cited using parenthetical citations. If you are citing the digital document collection simply use a short description of the document being cited. Example: (John Ross Address) or (Frelinghuysen Speech.) For the textbook use the author’s last name and the section cited. Example: (Keene, Chapter 11 Popular Politics). If citing a video or lecture, simply cite the name of the video and the approximate time in the video the info was presented. Example: (17th Century New England Lecture, 3:45).
Plagiarism (representing the ideas of another as your own) is unacceptable and will result in a grade of 0 on this assignment. Also, you are allowed to use ONLY the assigned materials from this class (including the textbooks, other assigned articles, and lectures/videos. If you use any other sources (including unassigned texts/articles or web sources) you will receive no credit for the paper. (note: you may use any of the documents from the “Industrialization and Social Conflict” text, not just those that were assigned.)
