Observation techniques can acquire effective information in different research design methods. For ethical reasons, though, they have to be carefully considered when investigating sensitive topics that could not investigated using an experimental approach. State how you would create a correlational research design using either direct or contrived observation methods or the use of content anlaysis or the observation of physical objects to study workplace bullying (which for ethical reasons could not assign people randomly to either a workplace group to be bullied or not) and its effect on organizational culture. The approach I would take to study workplace bullying would be the direct observation method. To minimize ethical concerns, I would follow the guidelines noted in the text and lecture. 1. Observe behavior that is performed in public where others could also observe. 2. Assure anonymity of the person(s) being observed. 3. Have the person(s) agree to observation. In this case, you could ask for employees to agree to #3 and/or observe openly and ensure anonymity (#1 and #2). The concern with #3 is that people may act differently, especially around a sensitive subject, such as bullying, which also may have legal implications. The correlational study would be to observe the behaviors, study behaviors that indicate some form of bullying are going on, and then correlate to the impact on workplace culture. Surveying the staff on satisfaction of workplace culture before the observations and then again after would be valuable. It would be great to see the scores of individuals before and after to see how bullies, those being bullied, and those witnessing the bullying score over time. Another way to ethically study bullying in the workplace is to perform case studies of reported bullying through interviews of those reportedly doing the bullying and those that felt bullied. This allows for richer data that could give valuable insights into the bully and any being bullied. In either case, it is important the the observer or researcher avoid any bias, as previous personal experiences or research can cloud judgment and assessment.
