In addition, generational divisions within the workplace have collapsed to a large extent and have added a more complex challenge for many people as they try to manage their careers while at the same time trying to achieve a functional work life balance. And given the predictions of a pending retirement crisis among Baby Boomers, this could further impact the cohort of working professionals who already find themselves part of the “Sandwich Generation”Links to an external site.
When considering career development, issues such as these are often not addressed until a work-life imbalance is experienced. As such, knowing the trends that are now shaping not only our career but the general satisfaction we have with that career is an important step towards being more effective in career decision making.

1. What does “work-life balance” (WLB) mean to you? Please give specific examples or factors that you use to define your WLB self-concept and how you prioritize your WLB goals.
2. Consider the fit between your current work role and your life outside of work. Do you feel that there is sufficient balance? Please give some examples to illustrate your assessments.
3. In what ways does your current organization (or recent former organization) assist in maintaining a positive WLB? If there are no formal organizational support structures, then in what ways do you think WLB opportunities could be created?
