Graduate Programs Discussion Boards
**respond to 4 peer post and create one main discussion board.
Discussion Boards (DB) are a key component of online learning. They foster active participation of learners and dialog with fellow learners and instructors. Graduate-level courses require learners to create original posts to course DBs and to engage in dialogue by responding to posts created by others throughout the course. Original posts and responses should be substantive, and if references are made to the works of others, APA guidelines for in-text citations and references apply.
Minimum Weekly DB Expectations
Post an original and thoughtful Main Post to the DB prompt.
Respond to at least 4 other posts from learners and/or the instructor (Response Posts).
The first contribution (Main Post or Response Post) must be posted before midnight (Central time) on Friday of each week.
4 additional responses are required after Friday of each week.
For DB assignment prompts with a Part One and Part Two, Part One should be addressed in the first week of the unit with a Main Post and minimum of 2 Response Posts, and Part Two should be addressed in the second week of the unit with a Main Post and a minimum of 2 Response Posts.
More on DBs
At the end of each unit, DB participation is assessed based on level of engagement and the quality of the contribution to the discussion. DBs allow learners to learn through sharing ideas and experiences as they relate to course content. Because it is not possible to engage in two-way dialogue after a conversation has ended, no posts to the DB are accepted after the end of the unit. Learners must demonstrate an appropriate depth of understanding of course content to receive credit for having submitted substantive posts. Typically, this is achieved with 3–4 strong paragraphs for Main Posts and 2–3 strong paragraphs for Response Posts.
Discussion Board Question
You have subsequently hired recruiters who are not having a great deal of success recruiting and selecting scientists. The dilemma is that these same recruiters, who now represent the bulk of your recruitment staff, are much better at recruiting and selecting sales personnel. The problem is that you probably should have split the difference and hired more sales-oriented recruiters, but you failed to do this.
Your choices are the following:
Allocate additional funds in the budget for additional scientific recruiters
Train the existing recruitment staff so that they are prepared to recruit and select the appropriate scientists.
Respond to the following questions:
In your opinion, what are the main issues pertaining to conflict and conflict resolution?
How do you demonstrate your ability to effectively deal with conflict?
In your opinion, what are the real-life solutions to the problem?
What are the criteria for success for this project and how will you measure success?
Use a format similar to the following:
initial idea surrounded by all follow-up ideas
In your own words, post a substantive response to the Discussion Board question(s) and comment on other postings. Your response should address the DB question(s) and move the conversation forward. You will be graded on the quality of your postings, including mastery of the concept as well as critical thinking. If asked for your opinion, do not simply state that it is a good or bad idea; elaborate on your reasons and argument. Include enough detail to substantiate your thinking as well as your position on the questions or comments.
1ST PEER POST
Your choices are the following:
Allocate additional funds in the budget for additional scientific recruiters
Train the existing recruitment staff so that they are prepared to recruit and select the appropriate scientists.
This is a tough problem. I think I would take an approach that is part A and part B. I would consider if we have any current recruiters who have a scientific recruiting background, can they help us? Which recruiters have had any success? I would consider releasing recruiters who have not been able to fill out needs.
From there I would re-allocate some funds and potentially get more budget to get the proper people in place to get the hires.
Respond to the following questions:
In your opinion, what are the main issues pertaining to conflict and conflict resolution?
Conflict often arises from differences, so it is important to be clear on what the differences are before getting starting resolving a conflict. If one party thinks the issue is one thing, and the other party another nothing will get resolved. To me the most important thing is to understand the issue.
How do you demonstrate your ability to effectively deal with conflict?
You have to first and foremost not get defensive or jump to conclusions. A lack of empathy and good listening skills will keep you from reaching a peaceful resolution. Just stay calm.
In your opinion, what are the real-life solutions to the problem?
The real life solution to the problem is pretty simple. We do not have the right people in place to recruit the employees we need to run our business and the longer this goes on the more detrimental this will be to our company. We need to remove the recruiters who cannot get the job done and replace them with recruiters who can. If it cost us a bit more I think we have to weigh the cost of running out business without the proper scientists in place.
What are the criteria for success for this project and how will you measure success?
The criteria is getting this all done as soon as humanly possible and within budget. We will measure based on how quickly we can hire the new people and get them up and running.

2ND PEER POST
Project managers are in charge of leading a team (often of diverse individuals) towards a common goal. To do so, they must motivate and inspire people toward the project’s end goal. Alignment is one way project managers streamline operations. This is because diffusion of decision-making and innovation is possible when team members are aligned with the overall vision of the project.
A key to alignment and to shareholder maintenance is communication. Project managers need to communicate effectively to their team and to outside shareholders during project implementation, when problems arise or when a major project change is required. Project managers must also create interpersonal relationships, not only within their team, but also with other functional and top-level managers. This helps facilitate upper-management commitment, resource sharing and information flow.
Question: What are some possible major challenges faced by project managers when they manage global virtual teams’ conflicts resolution? What would you change?

Dr. Sam

Managing, Using, and Resolving Conflict Through Negotiation
Managing conflict is using it to attain constructive, positive effects from it.
Resolving conflict is getting rid of it.
Avoiding conflict is not always the wrong strategy! Temporary or permanent avoidance may be appropriate in certain contexts and circumstances.
Avoidance is appropriate when the conflict effects are solely constructive.
Avoidance in the long run is inappropriate when the conflict is destructive. It will only get worse.
Selecting the correct strategy requires attention to interdependence.
The three choices in practical terms are to change the other person, change the situation, or change yourself. The first is not very likely! When the first two do not work or are not appropriate, one may have to change one’s attitude—change oneself! Internal conflicts must be resolved.

4TH PEER POST
Interests and Goals in Negotiation
There are four types of goals to be identified in every negotiation. These are gain aspirations (“G” goals), relationship values (“R” goals), ego issues (“I”) goals, and process choices (“P” goals).
It is helpful to identify and rank these goals from the perspective of each party in the conflict.
Goals may change during and after negotiation. Sometimes negotiation should be interrupted to evaluate and address new information or a shift in goals. An individual may adjust his/her goals retrospectively to make sense of the negotiation outcome. Retrospection can, however, assist one in improving future negotiation performance.
The step of identifying and ranking goals enables you to come to GRIP with your negotiation challenge. It provides information necessary for the choice and development of appropriate strategies. It also facilitates finding common ground that is critical to collaborating for mutual satisfaction.
