First, consider the objective of this course. ART101 hopefully prepares you to begin to demonstrate, discuss, write about, and apply knowledge of historical perspectives, form, style, and content of works of art. On a larger scale, this helps build skills in communication and critical thinking through effective and appropriate demonstration of reflection, analysis, and synthesis.
Or – bottom line upfront – show me what you’re learning, and what about that appeals to you!
You have two options for this assignment:
Option 1 – Exhibition Catalogue
Students curate a mock exhibit for a catalogue, making related selections according to a theme such as Nature. The theme can be anything you want it to be!
Choose five (5) works of art we have covered, identifying a theme that ties them all together.
Then, write a brief description of the works (include title, date, medium, etc.), give a bit of historical context, then link the work to the greater theme.
Cut and paste your work into a layout as in an exhibition catalogue or pamphlet. The pages should demonstrate a historical perspective, with brief reflection and analysis of style, form, and content.
Option 2 – Travel brochure
Students will create a mock travel brochure, designed as a world tour or pilgrimage that includes both art and architecture.
To start, choose a region or civilization. Choose 5 (five) works of art from that region that you believe are the “highlights” on a tour!
Then, write a brief description of the work (include title, date, medium, etc.), give a bit of historical context, then link it to the overall culture of the region. You might want to include notes on philosophies and religions associated with the works of art you choose. Also, consider adding why the work/structure you chose is a “Can’t-miss!” on your tour.
Cut and paste your work into pages as in an exhibition catalogue or pamphlet. The pages should demonstrate a historical perspective, with brief reflection and analysis of style, form, and content.
Your project should include a properly written Works Cited page – see this link for further information on style
