1. GRADING: 25% of your Final Course Grade will consist of the Museum Visit Paper. The THREE (3) museums that we will be visiting are The Museum of Florida History, The Grove, and the Historic Florida Capitol. Your visits may be either in person, virtual, or a combination of both. You must write about and describe the museums and their exhibits. Include answers to the following questions: What did you see? What do you think about the museums? Did they change your views about Florida History or our national story? Do the museums present their exhibits in an effective and engaging way that holds visitor interest? 2. DIRECTIONS TO THE MUSEUMS: The Museum Websites Announcement contains the museum website links which include the location, directions, and hours of operation for each museum. 3. GLOBAL AND SOCIAL DIVERSITY and CRITICAL THINKING: Visiting the Museums will provide you with information about and perspective on the role of Native Americans and African Americans during Florida’s long and storied history. Critical Thinking always happens when you visit a museum.
4. MUSEUM PAPER DUE DATE: OCTOBER 13 by 11:59 PM MIDNIGHT. Late Papers will be assessed a penalty. The reason for that is the large number of Museum Papers that I will be grading this fall and I can’t have papers trickling in right up to the final course grade submission deadline! 5. PAPER LENGTH AND WORD COUNT: The Required Museum Visit Paper must be a minimum of 3000 words total and you must indicate the word count at the top of the paper. You must write about each museum that you visit. 3000 words for the entire paper, not 3000 words per museum. You do not have to write the same amount per museum, but make sure you have some descriptive material on each one. Remember, papers shorter than 3000 words total will lose points with the deduction depending on how far below the 3000 word minimum you fall. You are free (and encouraged) to write more than 3000 words, but DO NOT fall short of 3000 words.
6. OBSERVATIONS: Go to the museum websites in Canvas Announcements Virtual Tour tabs and start exploring them. You may observe as many exhibits as you have time for but make sure you take notes on the ones you plan to write about. All exhibits discussed in the websites and shown in the virtual tours at The Grove, The Museum of Florida History, The Riley House, and The Historic Florida Capitol are appropriate for your paper. 7. POINT DIGITAL LITERACY FOCUS REQUIREMENT: Take pictures of yourself observing the online museum tours at your computer or, even better, get some pictures of yourself inside the museum! To meet the Digital Literacy requirement, embed and text wrap the picture of you observing the museums. One picture of yourself per museum will be sufficient, but you may include images from the museum websites to add interest to your paper. Use the example of me visiting England’s Cambridge University when I was a 22 year old college student as a guide for what your embedded picture will look like. You must type your museum paper in MS WORD. And, of course, your excited, happy face must appear in the picture! The picture with you in it is a requirement along with embedding and text wrapping. Don’t just stick the picture at the end of the MS Word file or leave gaps around it. Text Wrap is Required! Find some interesting exhibit or some background scenery and make your picture interesting! Have fun! 8. YOUR OWN THOUGHTS AND OBSERVATIONS: The bulk of your paper should be about your own thoughts and observations concerning the exhibits along with a SMALL AMOUNT of quoted or paraphrased information from the museum websites. Mainly, the paper should be about what YOU saw and what YOU thought about the exhibits. Do not cut and paste text from the museum website and stick it in your paper. You will receive 0 points if you do that. I will deduct points from the final paper grade if you do not explain and describe your own thoughts and observations about the museum exhibits. Therefore, you are encouraged to use first person tense in your paper.
9. WEBSITES, LIVE VIDEO, VIRTUAL TOURS and PHYSICAL IN PERSON VISITS: ALL information in your paper must come from the Museum Websites, the virtual and video tours, or physical visits. No other sources allowed!
10. 20 POINT CITATION REQUIREMENT: Although the bulk of your paper should be mostly your own thoughts and observations, you are required to include a small amount of quoted or paraphrased information from the museum websites. Read both museum websites and CITE THEM using Turabian/Chicago Manual of Style format. All website information that you use must be quoted or put into your own words. The Library has examples and info on Chicago Manual of Style/Turabian citations. For your Grove Museum citation, go to the “Learn” tab on the Grove website, drop down into the History tab, and then click on Richard Keith Call.1 Summarize some information on Richard Keith Call, include it in your paper, and cite it with a footnote like the example in the previous sentence. For your Florida Historic Capitol citation, go to the “Permanent Exhibits” tab on the Florida Historic Capitol website. Pick one of the exhibits, read about it, summarize the info and include it in your paper, and cite that information. Quote or paraphrase information from both website sources and properly integrate it into your paper.2 Cite any website quote you use and completely paraphrase any website information that you include in your paper. Embed a number footnote in the appropriate location in your paper and then place the footnote itself at the bottom of the page on which the quote or information appears. The footnotes at the bottom of the appropriate pages in your paper will look like the examples I have provided here in the Museum Visit Guidelines.
The BIBLIOGRAPHY page at the END of your paper will look like the example below. “Works Cited” is PROHIBITED!
SAMPLE BIBLIOGRAPHY
1. The Grove Museum, http://thegrovemuseum.com/
2. Florida Historic Capitol Museum, http://www.flhistoriccapitol.gov/
3. The Riley House Museum, https://www.rileymuseum.org/
4. Museum of Florida History, https://museumoffloridahistory.com/
1 The Grove Museum, Richard Keith Call, http://thegrovemuseum.com/learn/history/call/ 10 May 2022 (Insert correct access date)
2 Florida Historic Capitol Museum, Permanent Exhibits, http://www.flhistoriccapitol.gov/Pages/ExhibitsAndCollections/PermanentExhibits.aspx 10 May 2022. (Insert correct access date)
You may use these sample footnotes when you get ready to cite your museum website information. See how they are footnoted at the bottom of this page? That is how they should look in your paper. Use the “References Tab” in MS Word. Do not go to “Insert Footer” or your footnote will repeat on every page in your paper.
11. 20 POINTS: INTRODUCTION, MAIN BODY and CONCLUSION format. Start your paper with a brief intro paragraph explaining the project. Why do you think it is important or worthwhile to visit historical sites? In your Main Body, have a section for each of the three museums. For your concluding paragraph, explain your overall thoughts about what you learned and how the visits changed or influenced your perspective on the past. 12. 10 POINT TITLE PAGE: Give your paper a title page. Include your paper title, your name, AMH 2020, the class meeting time, and the WORD COUNT. You may add pictures or stylize your title page as you wish as long as you include the above information.
13. 10 POINT SPELL CHECK and GRAMMAR CHECK. Run an MS WORD spell and grammar check before turning in the paper. 10 Point deduction for excessive typos and grammatical problems.
14. Remember, your primary assignment is to HAVE FUN! Explore the websites or physically visit when you have time and are not in a rush. Going with friends, spouses, relatives, significant others or young children can make the visit even more enjoyable! Even if you are just at the computer screen. And, of course, visiting a museum or historic site is a great way to broadenyour prespective on the modern world!
