Using the readings from this unit, discuss the various ways in which a gendered division of labor enables women to have control over their every-day lives in meaningful ways. In other words, does “women’s work” in these times/places lead to women having independence, power, and control over their daily lives in real and practical terms? What are the consequences (if any) if women are perceived to have too much power or access to property that is typically considered the domain of men? Does women’s work result in the same type of economic independence as men?
In thinking about your response you may want to think about the following: the types of tasks women performed and whether they did so alone or in groups; whether and to what degree men were included or helped out; how highly the community valued the women’s labor (how essential to survival was their work?).
