Many of the readings in this course center on the experiences of women who, for varying reasons, resisted dominant cultural, social, and legal structures that circumscribed and shaped their lives in particular ways. While laws are meant to provide a framework for the perfection of justice, the law is also an institution constructed by societies in specific times and places expressing certain values. Many of the women you’ve learned about in this unit considered certain laws unjust and challenged those laws – both within the legal system and by directly defying it – with varying degrees of success and paying, in some cases, very high personal costs for doing so.

In this assignment, briefly describe the laws and social structures that one or two of the women or groups of women faced and how they went about challenging those laws and structures. Where applicable, you should include a discussion of their successes and failures, and the personal costs that resulted from these challenges.

After you’ve done this, reflect on this issue within the context of your own life: Can you envision, or have you ever encountered, a situation in which it is more just to resist or refuse to obey the law than abide by it? In other words, if you consider a law unjust, must you refuse to abide by it? Why or why not? How far would you go to resist those laws or customs? What other avenues of resistance to injustice might there be?
