Write an essay in which you explain how and why a neoliberal economic order, which first began to coalesce while Jimmy Carter was president, became institutionalized during Ronald Reagan’s first presidential term, even while wages mostly stagnated, the inequality between rich and poor greatly increased, and many people’s economic security became more precarious. (Be sure to keep in mind that “neoliberal†is far more like classical liberalism than modern liberalism as it had developed since the 1930s in the U.S. With neoliberalism, the dominant tendencies are deregulation of government control over the economy, promotion of international free trade, the lowering of taxes, and primary reliance on the market for the allocation of social goods.) In your explanation, you should take into account the role that racial and immigration politics have played in maintaining a neoliberal, or – as it is more often labeled – â€conservative,†order. Finally, and maybe most importantly, you need to consider how political battles over cultural issues like abortion, feminism, and sexuality contributed to the maintenance of conservative political economy, especially in light of the power wielded by the so-called Religious Right since the late seventies. Among the specific events and issues, you need to discuss the various economic and political crises of the 1970s, including the tax revolt, the Reagan era tax cuts, and the meaning of Reagan’s landslide reelection in 1984.
