You will pick a piece for art from the powerpoints (ATTACHED BELOW) and complete a formal analysis of the work. You must include an image of the artwork you chose in your paper.
Step-by-Step How To…
PARAGRAPH 1: Introduction
In a few sentences, introduce and describe the work.
Identification: What is the title, artist’s name, date, and medium of this artwork?
Description: What do you see? What is the subject matter? Is it a representation of something or is it nonrepresentational? If it is representational, is it an abstraction of something? Are certain elements exaggerated? This section is not an analysis of the work yet, though some terms used in Paragraph 2 might be used here. This section is primarily a few sentences to introduce the artwork and give the reader a sense of what it looks like.
PARAGRAPH 2: Elements of Design
This is the key part of your analysis and should be the longest section of the essay. You will describe in detail how the artwork has been composed using the elements of design that we learned about in this first half of the semester. Be sure to take into account whether the work of art you selected is a two-dimensional or three-dimensional work, whether it involves time or motion, etc. If one of these terms does not seem to relate at all to the artwork you chose, you do not need to include it.
Elements of Design:
Line (straight, curved, angular, flowing, horizontal, vertical, diagonal, contour, thick, thin, implied etc.)
Mass and Volume, Texture (actual or implied)
Shape (what shapes are created and how)
Light and Value (what is the source of the light? is there high or low contrast? Are there visible highlights or shadows?)
Color (primary, secondary, complimentary, warm, cool, monochromatic, tints/tones/shades)
Space (foreground, middle ground, background, different kinds of perspective used)
Time and Motion (actual or implied)
Words and Sounds
PARAGRAPH 3: Opinions and Conclusions
This is the part of the paper where you go beyond description to offer a conclusion and your own informed opinion about the artwork. Any statements you make about the work should be based on the analysis in Paragraph 2 above. Do not simply rely on internet research to draw your conclusions.
Discuss how and why the key elements of design used by the artist help create meaning. Support your discussion of the artwork’s meaning with some of the known context about the artwork (remember our formula: subject matter + medium + form + context = meaning).
FORMATTING:
Essays should be typed in Times New Roman or Arial, 12 point font, double-spaced, no extra spaces between paragraphs.
