1. Describe how the philosophies of John Locke and Adam Smith influenced the founding principles of the United States. Do you believe that in order to have a successful democracy you must have a capitalist economic system or vice versa?
2. Which pathways of engagement in U.S. government do you follow (Do you vote? Do you follow the news? Do you belong to any organizations? Etc…) Why do you prefer these approaches? If you are an international student, you can share what you’ve learned from your time spent in the US and also your experiences in your home country.
3. Are there any redeeming qualities to elitism and any downsides to pluralism? Are there benefits to having elites rule? Are there any problems with allowing interest groups to exercise influence over government? Explain. (Even if you don’t personally think there are benefits to pluralism, the book talks about some. That is what I’m looking for). Chapter 2
1. What grievances led to the American Revolution? What were the main problems with the Articles of Confederation?
2. Discuss the conflicts and compromises that influenced the drafting of the Constitution. Be sure to list the big “Compromises” and what they detailed. 3. Describe arguments the framers (Federalists) raised in support of a strong national government and counterpoints raised by the Anti-Federalists. How did they compromise in order to ratify the constitution?

1. What is Federalism? Identify at least 3 key powers and responsibilities designated to the Federal Gov’t. and State governments. Identify at least 3 key powers and responsibilities designated to the State Gov’ts. .List 3 powers they share. 2. Explain the differences between a categorical grant and a block grant (Give an example of each). Which grant does the National government prefer to distribute?
3. Give an example of a power struggle between the States and Federal government and the outcome. Do you agree or disagree? (The book lists several. For example, Marijuana, Abortion, Same-Sex Marriage, Immigration, etc.).
