Learning Outcomes/Description
A screenplay is an essential “blueprint” for a finished film. Regardless of the genre, a screenplay must communicate all of the critical action, dialogue, and dramatic conflict that the finished film will contain.
This assignment will require you to analyze a professional screenplay as the blueprint for an already-produced film. You will identify the story’s key themes, conflicts, characters, and stages, and note how all of these elements are communicated on the page. This will act as an exercise in learning what elements of a film must be decided in detail before casting, performance, production design, storyboarding, scoring, etc. can begin. Detailed Instructions
Assignment length: 2-4 pages, double-spaced.
Choose a screenplay from the following list (preferably a film you have not already seen):
The Social Network (2010) – Aaron Sorkin
American Hustle (2013) – Eric Warren Singer, David O. Russell
Trainwreck (2015) – Amy Schumer
Call Me by Your Name (2017) – James Ivory
In paragraph form, answer the following questions about the screenplay you’ve just read, using detailed examples where appropriate:
Who is the protagonist and what is his/her main goal? Is it achieved and how? Why are we as readers invested in knowing/caring whether or not it will be achieved?
What is the main theme of the story? (You may choose to describe two or three).
Is there an antagonist? If so, how do his/her goals conflict with those of the protagonist? If not, what are the most formidable challenges that the protagonist must overcome, and why?
In your opinion, what is the most important scene in the screenplay and why? Again, be sure to explain your reasoning in detail.
In your opinion, which scene marks the end of the film’s first act and why? Repeat this step for the beginning of the story’s third (final) act.
How does the dramatic action in the screenplay’s third act resolve the themes/conflicts introduced in the first act? Does the story conclude as you expected? Why/why not?
