100 word response to this : The Articles of Confederation of 1977 was the first official constitution of the United States of America; it stayed in effect until 1798 when it was replaced by the current US constitution (National Archives, n.d.). The Articles of Confederation were passed because the 13 independent states could not agree on several things; thus, the document acted an agreement among the states. Due to its lack of structure and uniformity, the Articles were not used for more than a decade. Two of its issues were that Congress had sole power and discretion over the budget and that all amendments proposed to the Articles of Confederation would require the approval of nine states (National Archives, n.d.).
Two of the major debates that were used to create the current constitution are the question of slavery and the question of democracy. In terms of the question of slavery, slave masters wanted their slaves to be counted alongside the national population; arguing that their slaves represented an additional burden as property (OpenStax, 2019). Some governors called for the complete exclusion of slavery from the new constitution. Based on this, the states agreed on the three-fifths compromise; three out of every five slaves would be counted alongside the White population (OpenStax, 2019). The question of democracy led to the establishment of the Electoral College. This institution ensures that the power of electing the president is not only at the hands of the people. ironically, this has been criticised for being a barrier to democracy.
The major differences between the Federalist and Anti-Federalist groups are that the Federalists were proponents of the constitutional ratification while the anti-Federalists were opposed to the ratification (OpenStax, 2019). The federalists advocated for a single national government while the anti-federalists called for decentralized governments at the state level (OpenStax, 2019).
