After the war, came the issue that not all Americans agreed upon: whether or not to sign the Treaty of 1898. To support the treaty meant support of America becoming an imperialist power and not all Americans believed that was a good idea. For example, while Mark Twain (the famous author) loved the war, he said that if the nation signed the treaty, the nation should replace the stars on the flag with skulls and cross bones.
For this week’s forum, take a close look at the terms of the Treaty of 1898 and its implications for America becoming a world power, exercising imperialist policies. Consider how signing it will change the nation. Consider why some people supported it and some people opposed it.
For this week’s discussion, you will take on a persona and pretend to be someone who was alive at the time. It does not need to be a real person living at the time. Be detailed in the persona you create. For instance, consider factors such as age, gender, socio-economic standing, political party affiliation, occupation, race/ethnicity/national origin, year of arrival in the Americas, which state one lived in, where in the state (city, rural, etc.) one lived, friends and family members, and anything else you deem pertinent.
