This week I chose to discuss question number 3, “What was the relationship between consumer culture and the emphasis on family life in the postwar era?” As I have already read from some others, items such as the GI Bill allowed for many to afford receive additional education as well as the ability to purchase homes. These items coupled with the increase in marriages as well as births increased the demand for increased purchases. According to the New York Historical Society, furniture and appliance purchases increased by 240% following the war. During this time, it was said that wives made most of the purchases for the family. The increased popularity of the television allowed for additional advertisements while families were spending time together watching it. Following the baby boom, the demographics changed drastically with more children and teenagers. Companies took this opportunity to create advertisements that were directed toward this group of people that now made up the majority. Discussion 2
Why was the United States unable to avoid entering a Cold War with the Soviet Union? Hello Class, the United States couldn’t avoid entering the Cold War mainly because it wanted to be the World’s superpower. The Soviet Union was a communist country and had no democracy in it. Secondly, The United States and other democratic nations found that communism was a threat to our values and human rights. Another fear is that if the Soviet Union became a superpower, it could lead to a domino effect. Other countries around a communist country would fall into communism. Thirdly, we chose to get involved due to the expansion of capitalism. With this type of system, the government doesn’t take much control. However, the socialim that the Soviet Union adopted meant that they had more control over the economy. If other Western countries adopted socialism, that would prevent the U.S from free trade. Lastly, the Soviet Union tested a nuclear bomb in 1949. That test caused the United States to become very cautious. After the test, this drove an arms race between the two big powers. In 1949, the United States participated in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was developed. The Soviet Union decided to respond with the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), and due to the arms race, the big reason why the United States couldn’t ignore the Cold War.

What was the relationship between consumer culture and the emphasis on family life in the postwar era?
Due to the Servicemen’s Readjustment Act, or GI Bill, millions of men experienced an economical growth, the ability to own a home and attend college. This rise in income and opportunity, the unprecedented growth in the birth rate known as the “Baby Boom.”, and the creation of the television postwar created an increase in middle class and spending, with the television helping promote goods. The fear of war and death also led to a resurgence in religious practices and a new found sense of Patriotisms for protecting ones country, and preventing future wars preserving the peace earned through blood, courage and resiliency. With all these factors in place a new found belief in family friendly values was seen through out the United States post war. All the above describes the relationship between consumer culture and the emphasis on family life in the postwar era, a more prosperous, educated, man with the fear of the terrors of war and the passion to prevent any further wars for his offspring leading to a safe home, that he can now afford, for his family to practice religious freedoms in peace. I hope everyone is staying safe and have a great day.
