past, when dinosaurs were on Earth. However, evolution is an ongoing
process, occurring around us every day. A particularly disturbing
example is the evolution of antibiotic resistance in
bacteria. Antibiotics are important drugs used to treat infections by
bacteria. Most people have taken antibiotics over the course of their
lives to treat illnesses. Unfortunately, because of evolution, many
common bacteria are developing the ability to evade or tolerate
antibiotics. This is a serious threat to public health, since it means
that many diseases which have been readily treatable for decades may
soon be much more difficult to eradicate.

How do bacteria evolve antibiotic resistance?
What activities and practices of humans make it more likely that
resistance will evolve? Have you ever done anything that may have
contributed to the evolution of antibiotic resistance?
