Folks, all sciences, including biology, measure all sorts of things. We therefore need a uniform, consistent system of measurement, which is the metric system. This lab introduces you to the metric system. You need a mm ruler (available cheap at WalMart, Target or Staples), an empty gallon jug and empty 2 L bottle.
Please complete the following:
1. Watch these videos: 2. This is for reading only. Scroll through this to help learn about the metric system. https://www.nist.gov/pml/weights-and-measures/metric-si-prefixes
3. Using your millimeter ruler, complete the following and place your answers on the attached Word document. Measure any two small, two or three dimensional objects. What are the three dimensions in metric and in Imperial (English) units? How many centimeters in a meter? How many millimeters in a centimeter? How many centimeters in an inch? How many meters in a kilometer?
4. Take your empty 1-liter bottle. Fill it with water and carefully transfer the water to the empty gallon jug. About how far up the jug did the water go? Now repeat three more times. About how much is that total volume of water relative to the total possible volume in the gallon jug? Thus, what is the relationship between liters and gallons? Describe what you did at the end of the Word document. Be specific and use the scientific method!
