GUIDELINES FOR READING RESPONSES
Response papers are short, written responses (approximately 500 words in length) to the assigned play of the week. These are not intended to summarize the play and its plot or to involve outside research into other critical responses but are to be your reactions and thoughts and connections to and between the plays in discussion over the course of the semester. The responses are intended to be a place for you to intelligently and rigorously engage these dramatic texts, but you are encouraged to do so in a more freewheeling and imaginative manner than you would in a traditional essay. Use them to brainstorm, play with new ideas, and investigate the concepts and themes of the plays and the course. Use them as a place to discuss, explore, springboard from, and muse about ideas the assigned reading raises in your own consciousness. And do so at the highest level. Push yourself. Do more than simply say what you liked or didn’t like about the plays. Certainly, you should address the readings themselves (character, themes, structure, aesthetic, style, etc.). But you can and should also attempt to place the plays and their ideas in a larger context. This contextualizing can begin by comparing the new play to those we’ve studied earlier, other works of literature, historical or cultural events of the play’s era, and even subjects you are studying in your other classes (i.e. economics, sociology, history, etc.).
