Remember to use this space constructively as a way of deepening the conversation and understanding the material in different ways.
1)Rowlandson: At the end of her narrative, Rowlandson says, “I hope I can say in some measure, as David did, ‘It is good for me that I have been afflicted’” (159). How is it possible that she feels her captivity and loss of family has been good? How does this attitude reflect or embody the wider experience of Puritan theology or history?
2)Captivity Narratives: Many scholars view the captivity narrative as the first American genre to emerge and shape the culture. What is the purpose(s) of such narratives? Why do you think the captivity narrative became so popular and influential or what makes it seem particularly “American”? Can you think of any other literature, films, TV shows or the like that draw on these conventions of the captivity narrative?
3) Mather: In his preface to his telling of the Salem witchcraft trials, Mather situates himself as a disinterested observer: “and I report matters not as an advocate, but as a historian” (169). Do you believe this statement? Why or why not? Cite specific evidence from the text. What does Mather’s account of the Salem trials perhaps reveal about how “false accusations” rise and circulate in today’s society?
