3) Mather: In his preface to his telling of the Salem witchcraft trials, Mather situates himself as a disinterested observer: “and I report matters not as an advocate, but as a historian” (169). Do you believe this statement? Why or why not? Cite specific evidence from the text. What does Mather’s account of the Salem trials perhaps reveal about how “false accusations” rise and circulate in today’s society?
