During the Progressive Era, there was “widespread dissatisfaction…centralizing the struggle for rights in society” (The Progressive Era 3). Part of the goal included workers demanding higher wages, and a safe work environment, and less working hours. Several incidents occurred where many workers form unions to strike, forcing their upper ranks to accomodate and meet their demands such as ‘Pullman Strike’ where railroad workers responded to layoffs and wage cuts through interfering with the railways. However, most strikes including this one, resulted in brute force hired by the higher ranks “equipped with badge and beer and bludgeon” (Debs 11). However, in 1911, there was an unfortunate tragedy called the Triangle Fire which burned down the whole factory and ended up killing many who were stuck and had no way to escape due to the cheap working environment, although tribute was paid for and the victims were insured by the citizens of New York, “women had to burn first” in order to motivate the public to finally yearn for better worker condition (Triangle Fire 50:40). People came together to demand a reformation of the Progressive Era because although part of the American Dream is to earn the right to work to provide, organization plays a key role in ensuring that right in a safe and efficient manner such as the work strikes and the tragedy of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory.
