This essay will be primarily a book review with your critical analysis of Benjamin Madley’s An American Genocide. Using Madley’s book, explain and analyze the following within your essay:
Introduce the text, including all pertinent information (author, title, etc.)
Identify Madley’s purpose, argument, and/or thesis statement
Acknowledge what time period and subject matter the monograph addresses
What is his perspective? Address whether or not he exhibits any perceptible bias(es)
Examine the types of sources Madley uses as evidence. Identify the types of sources and note whether they are primary or secondary sources
Briefly summarize the key themes of the book and bring your own interpretation of his coverage of this history by incorporating specific examples and evidence (for example, what did he do well? What did he not do well? Is his argument compelling, why or why not?)
If you’d like, place Madley within the historiography, or in other words, the other scholarship on California indigenous peoples and/or genocide as you are able.
This is not a book report, but rather your chance to interpret a piece of secondary scholarship and practice the work of a historian by critically analyzing Madley’s work and placing it into some context. Scholarly book reviews take their own form (as you saw in our Week 5 examples), and your essay will be a hybrid of that. You are also in the driver’s seat here. You get to come to your own conclusions and decide which information to focus on in your essay.
