Let’s talk about the thing that everyone should be already thinking about: COVID-19. There is a lot of information out there, some of it good, some of it not. This week I want you to post 2 “facts” about SARS-CoV-2 (the virus), COVID-19 (the disease), or one of the various new vaccines. TRY TO USE INFORMATION FROM THE LAST 3 MONTHS. Please avoid topics of law, politics, or social implications. Just “factual” information regarding the virus itself. You must use a total of 4 different sources, and include links to these sources.
Why is the word “facts” in quotes? Because this is all new. There is a lot we still don’t know. On March 17, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended “that people suffering COVID-19 symptoms avoid taking ibuprofen, after French officials warned that anti-inflammatory drugs could worsen effects of the virus” (https://www.barrons.com/news/avoid-taking-ibuprofen-for-covid-19-symptoms-who-01584476710 (Links to an external site.)). The next day, on March 18, they retracted this recommendation (https://www.sciencealert.com/who-recommends-to-avoid-taking-ibuprofen-for-covid-19-symptoms). The WHO is generally a trustworthy source of information – but things are moving quickly, new information is being uncovered all the time, and everyone is struggling to keep up. So what is considered a “fact” is somewhat in flux.
Remember – a fact is a statement.
So here’s the assignment:
DUE BY MIDNIGHT THURSDAY. Post 1 published “fact” (a single statement) that you believe to be TRUE, and 1 published “fact” that you believe to be FALSE. For each “fact”: a) QUOTE THE FACT from your source, and include a link. b) RESTATE THE FACT in your own words. c) EXPLAIN WHY YOU DO/DON’T BELIEVE IT. d) Cite one source supporting your position. As a guideline, here are what I very roughly believe to be credible sources, from most to least: scientific journals > news organizations > blogs and corporations > social media > advertising. Both true and false statements can be found in all of these sources – so be careful!
