Answer the following questions about topics we have discussed in class so far. Please write one page per question.
1. What is historic revivalism and in what ways did it manifest itself in architecture? William J. Curtis, the author of your textbook writes: “History does not work like a conveyor belt moving between one point and another. A tradition may be ruled by dominant forms or governing principles, but it may also contain diverse strands, regional emphases, internal loops, disjunctions and continuities. In turn each architect develops a special relationship with the past.” Could you provide two examples of architects or architectural projects in which two characteristics from the above quote were captured?
2. In his manifesto “Ornament and Crime,” Adolf Loos writes: “We have out-grown ornament, we have struggled through to a state without ornament. Behold, the time is at hand, fulfilment awaits us. Soon the streets of the cities will glow like white walls! Like Zion, the Holy City, the capital of heaven. It is then that fulfilment will have come.” Please elaborate on some of the ways in which ornamentation in architectural design was challenged by Adolf Loos himself, as well as two other Modernist architects and designers: Gerrit Thomas Rietveld (De Stijl) and Walter Gropius (the Bauhaus).
3. What was idealism and utopianism in early 20th c. architecture? Was it a political movement or a purely aesthetic one? Could you name at least one architect or one architectural style in which idealism and utopianism was manifested? Think of Russian avant-garde or Italian futurism or the Bauhaus or De Stijl.
4. What is Gesamtkunstwerk and why was it so important to certain early 20th c. architects?
5. What are the similarities and differences between Art Nouveau and Art Deco? Please give 2 examples of each, feel free to use images.
