The Preliminary Bibliography
*Your preliminary bibliography should be submitted through Blackboard by 11:59 PM on October 16th
Your preliminary bibliography must consist of a minimum of four sources. All of these sources must come from the Jennings Library databases. If you would like to use a source from outside the databases (a book, scholarly article, or website), you must get my permission first.
The Task – How should you approach this assignment?
I recommend that you take the following steps as you prepare your preliminary bibliography:
1. Go to the Jennings Library home page and click on Articles & Databases near the bottom. Choose the History & Political Science databases.
2. The best databases for this project are Credo Reference, Gale E-books, and History Research Center. You should search in all of these databases in order to find the best sources.
3. Within each database search for your topic. If you are struggling to find sources in the databases, you should consult with me or with a librarian. We will be going to the library as a class on October 4th and you will have the opportunity to ask for assistance during that time as well.
4. When you find possible sources make sure that they contain a significant amount of information about your topic. Your goal is not to just find four sources – you want to find four good sources that will help you to write your paper.
5. Make sure that you note the citation for your sources so that you can list them correctly in your paper. The databases will usually generate a citation for you that you can just copy into a file.
Criteria for Success
How will you know if you are on the right track with your bibliography? Feel free to speak to me at any point if you have questions – I can also look over a list of sources to let you know if you are on the right track. You can also use the following checklist to make sure that your bibliography has all of the necessary components. You should also consult the bibliography grading rubric at the end of this document – this is what I will use to evaluate your bibliography.
Checklist for the preliminary bibliography
 Do you have four sources drawn from the Jennings Library databases? If you have found a source from outside those databases that you would like to include, have you sent it to me for approval?
 Are all of your sources clearly relevant to your topic and do they contain a significant amount of information about it?
 Does your bibliography include correct citations (MLA format) for all of your sources? Are your sources listed in alphabetical order?
