The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City has an incredible collection of art objects from the ancient Americas. Sadly, the galleries where this work is shown are being renovated, so it is not possible to visit them in person at this time.

Fifth Avenue at 82nd Street
On the museum’s website, go to Art, and then choose Art Collection. In the search window, search for pre-Columbian, and look at the images. You can also search by any of the cultures we are studying in this class: e.g., Maya, Olmec, Aztec, Inca, Nasca, etc. Select for “objects on display.”
Chose four objects to focus on; all must be pre-Spanish (before 1519 AD).
These should be objects that interest you; one will be the focus of your final term paper and presentation.
Objects must include at least three different culture groups, two different media, and both Mesoamerica and South America. (Objects that are on display.)
Do a separate drawing of each object. The drawing should be in pencil on a half- or whole sheet of plain white paper. Make sure your drawing is clear and neat, and shows close observation. http://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection
Many of the objects are also included on The Met’s Heilbrunn Timeline of Art History, which is an excellent research tool.
Prepare a brief report on all four items to turn in: Week 4, Friday, September 23. For each object, include a drawing, and a brief written report. First, list all of the catalog information from the museum label, and then compose a brief statement (two or three sentences) describing your reaction to the object, and why it interests you. Bring your drawings to class on September 23, to show them. All written work must be double spaced with pages numbered and your name on each.
No late work will be accepted without a doctor’s note.
