Adult- learners are beginning to dominate the halls of higher learning; especially when one considers online and distance coursework. For this reason, andragogy has become the dominant force and philosophy by which these courses are taught. Andragogy refers to the art and science of teaching adult learners. Unlike pedagogy, andragogy is based on self-direction, experience, and a readiness/drive to learn utilizing problem-solving and application which are based on higher orders of thinking (Kidwai, 2019). This philosophy is based on the underlying assumptions that adults, unlike children, have a necessity to learn, have input into what is being learned, and are drawn from experience or relates to the learners life in some significant way (Kidwai, 2019).
If I was to structure a class for adult learners I would first find a real connection with the students. You cant possibly know how to engage your students in learning if you dont understand who your students are. Once the connection is built, Its important to then correlate each lecture to current events that students would care deeply about. For instance, if I were a History professor teaching about the Boston Massacre, I would relate the event to the Kent State Massacre and other modern-day protests that were met with violence. This makes the concepts of the Boston Massacre more relevant and relatable to the learner. Lastly, I would want to make the lesson come alive, by having mock trials, simulated presentations, or other engaging activities. This involves the students collaborating on the decision-making process together to create a plan of action. This is a great way to learn from others and gives them real hands-on experience.
