In standard essay format, answer BOTH of the following questions.
Each of your two essays must be typed, double-spaced, in 12-point font. Use course readings, lectures, and films to answer the questions (you may also supplement with additional sources if you wish, but this is not expected). Include a bibliography for each question, of all readings and films cited. References for course readings are listed in the course outline (in APA format). Films can be referenced similarly to books/articles using the format: (The Making of Lissa: 2017) in the text, and a brief citation with the title and year included in the bibliography. The main films are listed for you, below, in this format. You may treat lecture information as ‘common knowledge’ and omit a formal citation. You will be penalized if your total text (not including bibliography) is less than 5 pages or more than 9 pages between the two questions.
1. Answer this question in 4-5 pages (excluding bibliography): 25 points
Brown and Closser (2016) describe seven perspectives (or approaches/orientations) in medical anthropology. Choose at least TWO of these perspectives and apply them to an anthropology of the body. (Think about week 4 here, we discussed how anthropology understands the body as something that is socially, culturally, and politically constructed. An “anthropology of the body” is an analysis of how a given belief about the body is socially, culturally, and politically constructed). Describe the perspectives you have chosen and why you think they are the most relevant ones to use in your analysis of the body. Then, apply these perspectives to explain how bodies have been viewed and treated in different cultural and historical contexts.
2. Answer this question in 2-3 pages (excluding bibliography): 15 points
Define the concepts of “illness”, “sickness”, and “suffering” and how they differ from the concept of “disease” (as discussed in Week 5). Then use examples from readings and films to illustrate why it is important to understand people’s experiences of “illness”, “sickness”, and “suffering” to understand how their illness affects them, their health behaviour, and/or their interactions with the health care system.
