Competency Connection: Redesigning a Corporate Website (Organization Module)
A global HR team needs to redesign the page on the corporate website that is aimed at people interested in employment opportunities. Launched several years ago, it now feels outdated and unexciting. It originally relied on links to presentations created by regions and departments, but team members have noted the lack of a consistent employer brand and a general lack of professionalism in the departments’ presentations. Technology will now support more types ofmedia delivered on mobile devices.
As is her usual practice, the team lead sets up a team conference call to discuss the issue and propose ideas. But at the end of the meeting, the team lead is not happy with the results. The group discussion seemed awkward, and people were reluctant to “think outside the box.” Her team is a mix of seasoned professionals and new members. Stationed throughout the globe to provide support across all time zones, they also come from very different backgrounds and nationalities. There have been few opportunities for the team members to get to know each other.
The lead decides to change her approach and proposes a competition. She divides the global team into four smaller teams of three to four people. Each team mixes representation from regions and levels of experience. Teams are tasked with proposing a portal design. Teams are free to choose how to approach this work, how often to meet, and what tools and media to use. They are constrained by a three-week deadline to submit their proposals and no budget to facilitate face-to-face meetings.
The team lead has found a way to leverage her team’s diverse perspectives and provide a valuable team-building experience. By taking the activity offline and reducing the number of people in each team and balancing cultural characteristics, she makes it easier for individual voices to be heard. Members feel more free to offer opinions, be actively involved, and add unique skill sets to the task. Team members also find it easier to coordinate meetings across time zones and experiment with new collaboration tools to achieve their goal. Whether a single proposal or a mix of proposal elements is selected, the team lead now has four thoughtful proposals and fresh views on the purpose and strategic value of the portal itself—for a much richer value-added solution.
