Creating a Typeface
A typeface/font itself can help create meaning. You will give meaning to a word through a newly designed typeface. Use the internet to research fonts, logos, and typefaces that you find inspirational. Remember you are trying to make a font that is new, unusual, or never seen before – be creative!
What you will need:
• 8 ½” x 11” plain drawing paper
• Drawing tools (for ex. pencil, pen, and color markers or watercolor paint)
• Ruler or straight edge
Instructions:
• Choose an adjective or verb. Think of the meaning of the word you have chosen.
• Create a new typeface that will help illustrate the meaning of the word you chose, i.e. for the word “drip” the letters could be formed with small drops of a liquid.
• Decide how the orientation of the paper (vertical or horizontal) will best exhibit your alphabet.
• Draw out the entire alphabet in your newly designed typeface, by hand, with the suggested materials. Do not write the word you chose, write the entire alphabet!
• You may add color to your piece with the markers, paint or colored pencil. Remember that your new typeface is the focal point of your piece, not the color or background design. Make your letters stand out!
• Make note of which adjective or verb you have illustrated with your typeface.
• Sign N and date the front of the drawing so that it’s visible.
