This week we reviewed Chapter 16 dealing with cinematic images of (dis)ability. You learned about how to analyze mental disorders and watched clips from the Best Years of Our Lives, Murderball, Rachel Getting Married, Flight, and Wonder. I asked you to watch the film Still Alice or Temple Grandin as each highlights mental disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease and autism. (Or another film of your choice that features a mental disability – see below)
You have two options for your response essays this week. You can write a typical response paper similar to what you have done throughout the term or complete a mental disorder analysis as described in the video lecture.
First option:
If you choose to write a Response Paper you should characterize whether the portrayal of the disability was believable or accurate, and describe specific scenes and use outside research to supports your claims and conclusions.
Second option:
Choose a film featuring a mental (or physical) disorder either provided on Canvas (or one of your choosing) and analyze the disorder/film using the following prompt questions as a guide. Like a response paper tour analysis should be 1-page or slightly over.
1.  Describe the mental or physical disorder the character(s) suffer from. Describe the symptoms depicted in the film/scene. You will need to do some research and cite the DSM VI or other reputable sources to assist in adding credibility. (about 2 Paragraphs)
2.  Did the story or the actors performance have any obvious stereotypes concerning the disorder or its symptoms? (Describe specific examples from the film) (about a paragraph)
3.  In the film, how did society react to the character with the disease/disorder? What was the critical/public reception of the film and/or character in real-life? (about a paragraph)
As always, you are free to write about other subjects related to the film as they relate to the material in the text.
Your Response Paper should provide an analysis of the film as the content relates to the material presented in the textbook and your perspective.  Do not submit a summary of the film!
