Define what community means to you. Share an example of how you contribute to a community and how that contribution is impacting that community. (450 word maximum)
No sources needed. Wrote a “bad” version of the personal essay below. Hopefully the sentiment is there – feel like it needs to flow better and answer the ask better. It also doesn’t feel all that creative, needs something unique? Whatever you think could work, give it a whirl!
Here’s my bad version of the essay that needs to be re-written:
There’s many different communities that we all belong to. Our families, our friends, ours office community – heck, I even belong to a random little group of indoor roller hockey players (look it up, you wouldn’t believe it’s an actual thing that only 500 people know about).
Community to me isn’t just this feeling of fellowship with a group of individuals living in the same area. Community is the reason we’re all here. The purpose of our lives. Sounds a bit ridiculous or contrived doesn’t it? It’s not.
Of course we have personal ambitions but in the end we’re all here to contribute to our communities. I believe (and it’s just a personal opinion) the more communities we can fit into our lives, the more fulfilled, we’ll be. For me, communities, and being an active part of them, is life. And life and the time we have is precious.
My father was diagnosed with ALS twenty years ago. He was one of the lucky ones. He lasted for a long 15 years. I’ll spare the sob story because the unfortunate truth is many folks (heck even whomever is reading this essay) likely has dealt with Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis, the dreaded C word (cancer), or something else terrible, unexplainable and unimaginable – in some form in their lives.
And whether we like it or not, have joined a community of folks fighting for life.
This special community that I joined was the ALS association and a group of folks who unfortunately lose their loved ones no matter what. With an average 2 year life expectancy upon diagnosis and no cure insight, mortality is top of mind.
Of course, I try to contribute dollars and cents but truthfully money doesn’t matter. (Yup I just wrote that on a business school application essay). What I try to contribute is time. The most “valuable” thing possible. From the ALS Association Walks to merely watching TV with someone fighting the good fight – there’s no way to contribute enough time to this community.
Every nano second is impactful. Every donation adding to an ever growing group of research, attempting to find a cure. Contributing in whatever form one can is what matters. The purpose. The point of life.
Kellogg and it’s school of management is it’s own community. The alumni, the faculty, the current students. Heck, each EMBA class has it’s own community of folks that grow together over the course of two years.
Contributing time to Kellogg has it’s own purpose. And one that is just as precious.
