The scientists conformed that DNA was a helical, double-stranded molecule.
The discovery was significant because by knowing the structure of DNA, scientists could then proceed to understand the process of DNA replication, mechanisms of protein synthesis and of inheritance, and develop tools of genetics, such as those that are used for diagnosing and treating genetic disorders and for developing crops and livestock to be more productive.
