In 4-6 pages (double-spaced, 12-point Times New Roman font), address the following: In Founding Brothers, Joseph Ellis argues that the prospects of the new nation surviving its “infancy” were “bleak in the extreme.” Discuss some of the challenges, both at home and abroad, that the revolutionary generation faced as they attempted to fashion an independent, viable republic. What steps did they take in confronting these challenges, or in at least attempting to impose order and stability in the nation’s early years? Were their efforts effective? Finally, Ellis characterizes the nation’s early years as a “decade-long shouting match.” Discuss some of the issues that polarized these “Founding Brothers,” focusing especially on the rifts between Thomas Jefferson and George Washington and then Thomas Jefferson and John Adams. What do these feuds reveal about the nature of American politics in the nation’s earliest years?
Please read the following instructions carefully:
Your paper must be in proper essay form, meaning indented paragraphs, an introductory paragraph containing a thesis statement, a series of body paragraphs in which you build your argument and develop supporting examples, and a concluding paragraph in which you restate your thesis and, of course, state your conclusions.
You must cite the information that you pull from the book in the body of your paper. Please use the following format in doing so: (author’s last name, page number). This is how each citation should look, for example: (Ellis, 124). Remember that direct quotes should ALWAYS be introduced (“As Ellis argues,” “According to Ellis,” etc.) AND contain a citation at the end of the sentence. Also remember that if even one of your body paragraphs does not contain at least one citation, you are not adequately citing your work and will be penalized. We need to know EXACTLY where you located the information included in the body of your paper (even the material that you paraphrase!).
Please do not forget one of the writing tips I posted to eLearning: avoid overusing quotes! Please use quotes selectively and sparingly. We want to read your take on the book, not a bunch of quotes. We are only working with one book, so a bibliography will not be necessary.
We WILL penalize papers that contain spelling and/or grammatical errors, so please do not submit a “rough draft.”
Finally, you must submit your paper to eLearning by midnight on Friday, October 21st. Late papers will be assessed a penalty of one letter grade per day, which includes weekends.
