Your group project for this course is a research project exploring the quality of published lay summaries. Your specific research questions are: What is the quality of published lay summaries? And do different journals have different track records for accuracy and accessibility?
You will use our inclusive summary rubric to grade lay summaries from The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, PLOS Medicine, eLife and the Journal of Hepatology. Each student will assess two lay summaries and each lay summary will have three student reviewers (each group will be assigned 10 lay summaries to grade during tutorial). This will let us look for differences across the four journals (we’ll have scores for 50 lay summaries for each of the four journals, for a total of 200). Each lay summary will have three different graders, which will also let us explore inter-rater reliability.
You will share your findings in the form of a manuscript with the following sections:
Title: Come up with a short, engaging title for your paper
Author names: You can list these alphabetically since everyone is contributing equally (!)
Abstract (150-250 words): This section should summarize your paper.
Introduction (500-1,000 words): This section should provide the relevant background for your study and highlight the knowledge gap and research question. I have given you a list of papers you may include here in the “research project literature” module of Avenue.
Methods (200-500 words): This section should detail how our class collected and analyzed data.
Results: (200-500 words): This section should detail your findings. Please include at least one compelling figure.
Discussion (500-1,000 words): This section should link your results back to your research question. You should explain how/whether your findings fit with what we already knew and articulate why the findings are important. Please also highlight appropriate next steps stemming from your findings.
Be sure to include a list of references!
