During the General Biology II lab, you will be responsible for writing an essay (or a literature review) to discuss current research areas within the field of Conservation Biology.
This writing assignment is designed for you to discuss a specific topic in conservation. For instance, you could focus your essay on the conservation of Sea Turtles and look for the current research that has been conducted on this topic.
In order to address that topic, you will need to completely read primary literature that fits your topic. You will need at least 5 references, three of which need to be primary literature that investigates a given topic (keep in mind the more references you use the better your essay will be). You will use these references to write a short essay to describe what is currently being done to assess this conservation concern.
Your job is to explain the substance of the studies so that one of your peers in the class would gain a better understanding of the research than they would have been able to get from reading only one or two articles on the topic.
In particular, you could describe the results from a given study (i.e. the patterns in the data) in enough detail so that someone reading your summary would be able to “see” the patterns, based on your verbal desсrіption, without having to look at figures or tables represented in an article itself.
Current Trends in Conservation
Conservation biology is the integrated study of ecology, evolutionary biology, physiology, molecular biology, and genetics to sustain biological diversity at all levels of study.
In general, the length of your paper should be 2-3 pages (not including references, figures, and tables). This means your paper must be MORE THAN 2 pages but less than or equal to 3 pages double-spaced. I would recommend looking at a review article from the Journal of Conservation Biology and follow it’s formatting.
The selection of your title can be a very important part of your paper. Many readers will decide to read your paper solely on your title. Titles should be clear and concise. Do not use hanging titles (those with a colon or dash), titles that are complete sentences, interrogative titles, and titles that reference colloquialisms or popular culture.
Be sure to cite your references in the correct format, both in-text and in the references list. In the body of the paper order citations from oldest to newest and use name-year format. See the back of your lab manual for examples on how to cite in-text and in your reference list.
Tables and figures used a supplemental information are not required, but can be useful to explain or support the contents of your paper. Tables and figures should be self-explanatory and should supplement rather than duplicate the text. Do not present large amounts of data in tables. A reader should be able to interpret tables and figures without referring to the text. Tables and figures should not be separated on to different pages, so be careful in your formatting if you include tables and figures.
