During this course I encourage you to use the questions and concepts of medical anthropology
to investigate the world around you. Find a news item and discuss how it connects to the
issues we are considering in this course. This may specifically address an anthropological or
cross-cultural view of health, healing, and illness, or may reflect a current controversy or
development in medicine. You may need to do a little additional research to understand and
talk about the issues involved. You should write about 400 words, and include a copy of (or a
link to) your news article.
Remember that this is an exercise in formal, critical academic writing. Write in clear, wellstructured sentences and paragraphs. Your work will be graded on creativity, anthropological
reasoning and awareness of medical anthropological concepts and themes, thoughtful
consideration of your topic, critical thinking and logical consistency. Mechanics are important
– pay attention to organization, grammar, and spelling.
