Your Assignment is in two parts:
1. Analysis. In an analysis, you explain how the parts signify the whole, that is, how the specific phrases in the poem convey the themes. In your Introduction, identify the primary text and author, and provide a brief description of the Ramsey case using the “wh” questions as your guide. Introduce the themes that you are going to address (found in the Author’s Note by Gatwood).Your working thesis is that the dark themes outlined by Gatwood in her Author’s Note” are present in “Murder of a Little Beauty.” In the argument/analysis, cite a specific passage from the Gatwood poem and tie this into one or more of the themes. Explain the connection between the brief allusion in the poem to one or more of the disturbing themes. 2. Inferential Reasoning Applied to the Forensic Case. In the process of inferential reasoning, you first examine the factual evidence and data of a particular case. Then, using logic and common sense, construct a viable theory as to what occurred. Consider the factual evidence of the Ramsey Case :
–The Ramseys were very wealthy upper class white people who lived in an exclusive neighborhood in Boulder Colorado
–Patsy Ramsey was a former beauty queen, “Miss West Virginia”; Mr Ramsey owned a successful software company
–JonBenet was a beauty pageant child. Many people have criticized Patsy for vicariously living her life through the 6 year old and for sexualizing her child in these pageants
–JonBenet had a slightly older brother (Burke) who was not given the attention that his sister received
–The body of JonBenet was found in the basement closet by her father (Christmastime 1996). The body was bound in places with duct tape and there was a garrote on her neck, but she was killed by a blow to her head. —
–No sexual assault was indicated by the autopsy. The autopsy did show she had eaten a late night snack of pineapple. The children had both been given this as a late night snack.
–Patsy Ramsey called 911 in the morning and reported the child missing. After her report, Patsy thought the 911 operator had hung up , but before she actually did, the 911 operator heard Patsy say to someone in the Ramsey home, “Okay, I made the call.” –During their investigation at the Ramsey home, the Boulder Police found a rough draft of a ransom note written on Patsy’s stationery; the note was crumpled up and tossed in a trash can. The actual ransom note, which was unusually long, stated the author and associates were members of a small but international terrorist group, and the group kidnapped JonBenet. The kidnappers demanded a ransom in cash that, coincidentally, was the exact amount of money the Ramseys got for the Christmas bonus just a few days before (118,000 dollars). Handwriting experts could not conclusively identify the handwriting as that of Patsy or John Ramsey, but they were not ruled out. –Shortly after the murder, the Ramseys hired separate attorneys and a Public Relations consultant. –When the police interviewed the Ramsey’s son, Burke, the interviewers concluded from his curious and stilted responses that he had been coached in what to say and how to say it. –Patsy’s belligerent demeanor and her surprisingly vile language directed towards the police led many to believe she was directly involved in the murder of her daughter, though there was no real motive or proof established for this. –Shortly after the death of JonBenet, the Ramseys left Boulder, sold their house and never returned. –Patsy died relatively young of cancer. John Ramsey remarried.
Given these facts, write a narrative that logically accounts for most/all of the above information. Explain your account of events ! Do NOT merely guess or provide an opinion ! Apply logic ! For your conclusion, answer this question: How does your theory relate to the themes presented by Gatwood? Sources, Documentation and Length You are required to use the primary text (Gatwood’s poem) in your essay and at least two of the Sims sources. A Works Cited page is mandatory. Minimum length for the essay is 4.5 pages.
