Essay #1 (Race and Health)
Write a 3-page double-spaced essay explaining why it is problematic to attribute health
disparities to race.
Draw on films and readings linked
Provide historical, cultural, biological/genetic, and evolutionary evidence (all)
Refer to health disparities associated with COVID-19, maternal/infant mortality, and TB
Conclude with a statement regarding what the authors consider a more useful way to
explain health disparities and why.
Essay #2 (Recounting Stories)
Write a 3-page double-spaced essay about what we can learn about anthropology from Hurston
and Barker’s ethnographies.
In their ethnographies, Zora Neal Hurston and Holly Barker foreground their research
participants’ stories and life experiences. All is linked
Explain what the ethnographers’ focus on these stories tells us about 1) what it means
to approach the world from an anthropological lens and 2) the analytic value of that
approach. Consider these questions in your essay:
How do Hurston and Barker each use stories and observations in their ethnographies?
Consider the way the ethnographers use and tell stories, if and how they use them to
make larger theoretical arguments (or not, and if not why), whose stories they collect
and why.
For what purpose do the ethnographers tell the stories? How do the stories relate to
the author’s larger theoretical, analytical, or applied agenda(s) -praxis? What is the
ethnographer’s principal goal for telling the stories?
Devote equal space to both anthropologists
Refer to specific stories to illustrate your points and cite page numbers. (e.g., Barker
2013: 24). Do not reiterate the stories, i.e., do not retell them
Each anthropologist has their own narrative style and their own agenda for writing their
ethnography. Yet at the same time, as anthropologists, they share common concerns
and goals. What do these shared concerns tell us about the value of ethnography and
what it means to think anthropologically?
Advice for Essay #2: Organize your essay in terms of each anthropologist separately. Consider
what they are doing methodologically, ethically, theoretically/or in terms of praxis, and how
they constructed/wrote the ethnography.
Essay Guidelines:
Format: 1” margins, double-spaced, Times New Roman 12pt font
Citations: Must come from readings or films
o How to cite: (Author Date: page#)
o How to cite lectures: (Phinney lecture date/topic)
o How to cite movies: (Title of Movie)
Direct quotes may not be longer than one sentence. There should be no more than 3
direct quotes per page. Write in your own words.
Write in the active voice. Edit, spell check your work.
Use key terms and demonstrate you understand the terms you use
Only write out the title of the ethnography once.

Your concluding paragraphs for both essays should not be a summary of what you
already said, but should point to:

You do not need to provide a bibliography/reference page.
Do not exceed 3-page limit.
