For this assignment, students will consider the Paris COP21 agreement commitments and subsequent actions of individual nations. The goal of the assignment is to gain an appreciation for the international dynamics of climate change, and the different possible arguments used to justify the distribution of responsibilities for mitigation and adaptation.
Students will first choose from a list of countries and research their chosen nation’s pledges in the Paris agreement. They will then prepare a short report (~3 pages double-spaced, 12pt font, 1-inch margins) that puts those pledges in the context of the country’s vulnerabilities to and responsibility for climate change. You can include other facts that you deem relevant – such as a history of colonization, poverty, and so on – but don’t go crazy doing extra research. Cite your sources!
Reports should:
Briefly summarize key points of the country’s Paris pledges and subsequent commitments (if applicable) (5 points)
Evaluate these pledges in light of facts about historical and/or current emissions, and vulnerability to the effects of climate change (5 points).
Active participation in the informal group discussion of the agreement, where students will form alliances with other countries to argue for a future deal, will be worth an additional 5 points.
