1) As part of the initial group of Puritan settlers who landed at Plymouth Rock in 1620, Bradford was one of its primary chroniclers. What does his text convey about early Puritan life? What does Bradford want his audience to know/see and why? How does the reality of the New World match Bradford’s vision?
2) In “The Author to Her Book,” what is the metaphor Bradstreet creates and why do you think she made that choice? Also, consider the line: “If for thy father asked, say tho hadst none” (line 22). What might this line suggest to readers, and how does it affect the tone of the poem?
3) a What components make up Winthrop’s vision of the New World, which he articulates in the “city upon a hill” passage? And why do you think this metaphor of a “city upon a hill” has had so much influence or resonance in American society and culture? 4)Given what you know about Puritan life from reading Bradford and Winthrop, what new perspective do you find in Bradstreet’s poetry? Where is this new perspective most evident in her work? Cite specific examples from her poetry where possible.
