Process Papers [5 pts each]
Submit a 3 page process/response paper (12pt, Times New Roman, double-spaced, 1” margins) that responds to at least 3 readings, films, or other assigned texts across the designated period (Weeks 4 through Week 8) — and explores the ideas, themes, or topics from those texts that made you curious in some way. You should always try be specific and precise — that is, name the idea/concept/topic, explain or contextualize it with quotations (and explanations in your own words) and examples (and explanations in your own words) from the class readings/texts (to show me you did the reading or watched/listened to the texts), and share any insights, examples, or reflections you may have.
Use specific examples from the assigned texts (texts include assigned readings, films, and videos). Unpack those examples in your own words. Explain thoroughly how you are thinking about those examples in the context of the class.
Here’s a template/summary of what a process paper should generally look like:
Explain how at least 3 course texts from across the W4-W8 period have made you curious over the past few weeks. (Show me through your writing that you understand the big ideas that have come up in our class lectures/discussions. I will be grading for this understanding/mastery.)
Describe how those texts have changed what you think. Explore specific passages. Explain them in your own words, and write more than you think you need to. Say what you had previously thought (or what you had not thought about).
Discuss the importance of those texts to your understanding of contemporary Asian American and Pacific Islander experiences. What are the implications for Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in a legal context? In other contexts?
Questions to think through in your paper if you don’t know where to start:
What is one thing about a particular text that you learned or found interesting? Why? Explain, in your own words. Use specific examples from the assigned texts (texts include assigned readings, films, and videos) in the period of time that this process paper covers. For example, a process paper for Weeks 1-3 should talk about stuff from the Weeks 1-3 texts. You don’t need to write about everything; pick the ideas/themes most interesting to you. But make sure that you are making connections across the weeks so as to show me that you’re keeping up with the readings. Choose wisely.
What is one thing you were reminded of or can connect thoroughly to your personal life or experiences? What is one thing that affirmed your knowledge/experiences? How? Explain thoroughly. Use specific examples from the texts (texts include assigned readings, films, and videos) to make those connections clear/strong.
What is one idea you are struggling with or that you have questions about? Explain why and try to reason your own way through it first. Use specific examples from texts (texts include assigned readings, films, and videos). Again, explain as much as you can in your own words.
Evaluation of Written Assignments
Written assignments will be evaluated for a clear response to the proposed topics and/or questions, effective use and explanation of supporting evidence (from lectures, readings, videos, and other course materials), and the strength of verbal clarity and focus within the response.
