Please answer the following questions for a total of 40 points. There is not a specific length for the answers to each question but an estimate would be at least 3-4 pages for question 1 and at least 1-2 pages of writing for questions 2 and 3.
Everyone must answer this question (25 points):
1) In the study It’s Complicated, danah boyd details the lives of teenagers and their use of social media and Web 2.0 technologies in order to address a number of social issues and concerns brought to this practice by adults and society in general. Throughout the study, boyd asserts that understanding the context of these activities is paramount. In fact, we can state that we are dealing with a phenomenon that is still in formation and changing rapidly. While her general thesis is that teenagers are replicating the same practices they have for generations, albeit with new technologies, we can assume that this is a novel type of social practice with unforeseen results in many circumstances. With this in mind, please address the four affordances outlined by boyd and the notion of a networked public as framing devices for the study. How are conceptualizations of privacy, surveillance, panic, identity, perspective, addiction, danger, social status, literacy and inequality (just to name a few topics) among teens and their use of social media understood through the examples provided? Using the additional sources in the content folder such as the New York Times articles and other sources you may find, how does boyd’s thesis in 2014 compare to changing conditions since that time. Do we have a different take on social media use by teenagers in 2022? In conclusion, please utilize a reflexive example from your own life to discuss what you would recommend about the use of social media by teens going forward.
Please answer the two questions below (5 points each for a total of 10 points):
2) Using materials from the content of week 2, please describe the way both Marshall McLuhan and John Berger approach media. What are their methodologies and findings. How would you use Marshall McLuhan’s notion of ‘the medium is the message’ to describe the contemporary internet? One of the first points John Berger makes is that the act of seeing something is not as objective as we might at first think. Instead, he argues that what we see is conditioned by habits and conventions. What does Berger mean when he says that the process of seeing is not “natural,” that it is shaped by habits and conventions? What kinds of habits and conventions shape the ways we see and how do they do this? How does the recent conceptualization of multimodal anthropology relate to these theoretical precursors? What are the elements of multimodal anthropology and how does this break from former studies of media in anthropology? 3) What are the methods and applications of photovoice in both anthropology and beyond? Please describe the stages and possible outcomes of a photovoice project and provide at least two examples of its usage in either anthropological practice or in other fields. Using the readings by Shankar and Monteiro, what are the questions and critiques surrounding photovoice in anthropology? If you were to utilize photovoice as a research methodology what would you focus on and why? Please answer the following question (5 points):
What will be the focus of your case study? Please describe the media that you wish to focus on, the rationale for doing so, your methodological approach and your preliminary ideas about what you will discover or ascertain. You should be able to define the media clearly, its development over time, and at least five sources that you have located thus far for your analysis. Please use the reading in the Miderm content folder Ethnographic and Case Study Approaches: Philosophical and Methodological Analysis to assist you in structuring your case study proposal.
