Progressives believed that “the cure for the ills of democracy was more democracy.” How did progressive reforms attempt to bring more democracy to American society and government? In what areas were their reforms most successful? In what areas did they largely fail to succeed?
My basic answer was this:
Progressive reformers waged a war on monopolies, and social injustice, and end political corruption by increasing government intervention to protect the lives and welfare of the people. The most successful areas of reform included food safety requirements and labor laws. Regulations from the Meat Inspection Act and the Pure Food and Drug Act still help shape commerce today. Legislature passed stronger laws regulating work hours and employment conditions helping to ensure workers’ health and well-being. With the passing of the 17th Amendment, the people were able to elect officials instead of the legislature placing them in the senate seats based on their own interests. Progressive reformers largely failed to improve civil rights and end discrimination against African Americans. Women’s suffrage, while improved, failed to gain equality.
This is the feedback I got and needs to be addressed in the new paragraph to be rewritten:
Give examples! Be specific! “Progressive reformers largely failed to improve civil rights and end discrimination against African Americans. Women’s suffrage, while improved, failed to gain equality.” Why did they fail? Respond to forum questions: How did progressive reforms attempt to bring more democracy to American society and government? Dates and names of laws passed. In what areas were their reforms most successful? In what areas did they fail to succeed? Why? Dig a little deeper!
