SAMPLE RESPONSE:
1. How do cultural illusions affect our cultural ideals?
Commonly held illusions have the ability to shape both our view of the world and how we act without our being aware of it. If these ideals go unquestioned, they are given the power to perpetuate injustice. For example, in The Allegory of the Cave, Plato has Socrates tell us of prisoners who can see only a shadow puppet show and therefore take truth to be literally nothing but the shadows of the images they see (1). Thus influenced, the prisoners have no way of knowing the extent of their imprisonment and ignorance of the world around them. Meanwhile, in The Beauty Myth, Naomi Wolf describes the current dissemination of millions of images of the current ideal of female beautya circumstance that traps women within the beauty myths unreasonable expectations and works to devalue them socially, politically, and economically (2).
[Note that the response begins with an original answer to the question and then proceeds into supportive quotations from both readings. Note also that quotation and MLA citation are handled correctly for both authors. Responses should be single spaced with one blank line space before the next question begins. You might state the titles of the readings in your response to the first question, but you dont need to state them again.]
